In 2009, Chev Cabrias (a former co-teacher) and I were handed a daunting task: create a jingle for CITCS (College of Information Technology and Computer Science). With time ticking and resources thin, we decided to take the bull by the horns and tackle the challenge head-on, using our own ingenuity and resourcefulness.
We even contemplated throwing in the towel, the task seemed so overwhelming. But we persevered, determined to create something that would capture the essence of CITCS.
To make the jingle relatable to everyone, we opted for a ska/punk genre, a blend of punk rock energy and danceable grooves. The song we penned was a playful homage to Top Junk’s “The In Crowd,” injected with our own lyrics and a catchy guitar tab.
For the vocals, we didn’t have much time to find a singer, so when I spotted Lisa Lipata (one of our student) strolling down the hallway, I knew she was a godsend. I had heard her sing before and was instantly convinced she was the perfect fit. Lisa, a talented singer and a BSCS student at the time, graciously joined our one-hit-wonder band.
With the band in place, we worked tirelessly, cramming everything into a single week. We even went the extra mile and recorded the jingle, ensuring that even if it didn’t make the cut, future generations would still get to hear our creation.
This jingle embodies the very spirit of CITCS – a spirit of resilience, creativity, and passion. We do what we do because it’s in our blood, it’s who we are. We face challenges head-on, always finding the silver lining, even when things seem bleak. And we have true friends who share our laughter, our dreams, and our unwavering belief in what we do.
